On the heels of the Obama administration's decision to embrace some of the more egregious elements of the Bush administration's policy on secrecy (see here and here), the Justice Department has appealed a district court ruling that granted Habeas Corpus rights to prisoners held at Afghanistan's Bagram Airforce Base.
In essence, the Obama administration is arguing that prisoners of the United States can be flown from anywhere in the world to Bagram and imprisoned without due process, indeed, without rights of any kind.
Keep in mind that the Obama administration isn't merely continuing a Bush-era lawsuit on this matter - it is actually appealing the ruling of a conservative Bush appointee who claimed that this procedure was as unconstitutional as what was happening at Guantanamo. In fact, the judge claimed that detainees at Bagram received fewer rights than detainees at Guantanamo.

"Send for a clergyman, I wish to be baptised. I have been basely murdered." - The last words of the aforementioned General William Nelson.
Sam Watkins was one of only seven men who survived from the First Tennessee Infantry, Company H, out of an original number of 120. His take on the war:
I always shoot at privates. It was they that did
the shooting and killing, and if I could kill or wound
a private, why, my chances were so much the better.
I always looked upon officers as harmless personages.

HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF TENNESSEE,
In the Field, October 12, 1864.
To the Officer Commanding U. S. Forces at Resaca, Ga.:
SIR: I demand an immediate and unconditional surrender of the post and garrison under your command, and should this be acceded to, all white officers and soldiers will be paroled within a few days. If the place is carried by assault no prisoners will be taken.
Most respectfully, your obedient servant,

General J. B. HOOD:
Your communication of this date just received. In reply I have to state that I am somewhat surprised at the concluding paragraph, to the effect that "If the place is carried by assault no prisoners will be taken." In my opinion I can hold this post; if you want it come and take it.

Juan Cole, Professor of Middle Eastern and South Asian history at the University of Michigan, discusses Obama's rhetoric on Afghanistan.
"Obama's dark vision of the overthrow of the Afghanistan government by al-Qaida-linked Taliban or the "killing" of Pakistan by small tribal groups differs little from the equally apocalyptic and implausible warnings issued by John McCain and Dick Cheney about an "al-Qaida" victory in Iraq. Ominously, the president's views are contradicted by those of his own secretary of defense. Pashtun tribes in northwestern Pakistan and southern Afghanistan have a long history of dissidence, feuding and rebellion, which is now being branded Talibanism and configured as a dire menace to the Western way of life. Obama has added yet another domino theory to the history of Washington's justifications for massive military interventions in Asia. When a policymaker gets the rationale for action wrong, he is at particular risk of falling into mission creep and stubborn commitment to a doomed and unnecessary enterprise."
Update: Added link to wikipedia's entry on the domino theory.

Jimmy Chamberlin responds!
March 24, 2009 | 6395 views
Jimmy Chamberlin has crafted his own response to the news that he has left The Smashing Pumpkins.
I will say, without going into any unnecessary details that this represents a positive move forward for me. I can no longer commit all of my energy into something that I don't fully possess. I won't pretend I'm into something I'm not. I won't do it to myself, you the fan, or my former partner. I can't just, "Cash the check" so to speak. Music is my life. It is sacred. It deserves the highest commitment at every level and the Pumpkins are certainly no different. I'm sorry but it really IS that simple. There is no drama, bad blood, or anything else but a full commitment to music. My best goes out to Billy and I'm glad he has chosen to continue under the name. It is his right. I will continue to make music with the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex as well as pursuing other musical interests. I feel that I have a long way to go and a lot to give
I think the "cash the check" comment is telling.

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS' BILLY CORGAN ANNOUNCES THE DEPARTURE OF JIMMY CHAMBERLIN FROM THE GROUP
CORGAN SET TO HEAD INTO THE STUDIO TO CREATE NEW SMASHING PUMPKINS MUSIC
The SMASHING PUMPKINS' guitarist, singer, songwriter and founding member Billy Corgan has announced that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has left the group. Chamberlin joined the band Corgan founded in Chicago in 1988 and played on all their albums except Adore (1998). Corgan will continue to write and record as SMASHING PUMPKINS with plans to head into the studio this spring.
I know most of you will simply shrug your shoulders. But people, know that this is a sad day for me. And fuck Corgan for still calling it the Smashing Pumpkins.
Goddamn it! 2009 has not been a good year so far.

I was thinking about out gaming discussion and ran in to this program on the internet. It's called cyberboard, and it allows you to play games via e-mail. The catch is that you still the need the game for the rules, combat tables, etc. and it's not live action. However, the coolest part is that this cat also made a designer program so that you can make your own boards and game pieces. I made a replica of the Tactics 2 game board this weekend. Pretty rad.

Glenn Greenwald lays it out:
"There is a major push underway -- engineered by Obama's Treasury officials, enabled by a mindless media, and amplified by the right-wing press -- to blame Chris Dodd for the AIG bonus payments. That would be perfectly fine if it were true. But it's completely false, and the scheme to heap the blame on him for the AIG bonus payments is based on demonstrable falsehoods."
I guess that this wouldn't be as terrible if Dodd wasn't facing an uphill battle for his seat in the next election cycle. It would still be craven and dishonest, but less treacherous.

Chris and I were just talking on the phone, and he asked me about the plan to tax employees of AIG who received some of that $165 Million in bonuses. I said that it seemed to me that the plan wouldn't be constitutional, as it seemed to be an example of a bill of attainder, which is explicitly prohibited by the US Constitution.
Marc Ambinder of The Atlantic thought the same thing. Then he asked Lawrence Tribe of Harvard what he thought. Here is Tribe's take on it.

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know that I had a good time seeing all of you this last week. As I was entering Gainesville proper, I noticed a young couple standing on the sidewalk, looking skyward. I did the same in time to see the plume from the Shuttle launch streak into existence. It is the second time that I've seen the launch from Gainesville, but the first time was during a very overcast day, and the plume was barely visible against the cloud-cover. Today, however, the skies were clear, and the smoke from the boosters was the only thing visible.

Former Republican and member of the Religious Right lays the smack down.
"You Republicans are the arsonists who burned down our national home. You combined the failed ideologies of the Religious Right, so-called free market deregulation and the Neoconservative love of war to light a fire that has consumed America. Now you have the nerve to criticize the "architect" America just hired -- President Obama -- to rebuild from the ashes. You do nothing constructive, just try to hinder the one person willing and able to fix the mess you created."

This is the kind of car I'm tlaking about. The thing has a range of 280 miles. Honda is even working on a solar powered hydrogen enine that can fuel people's home.
I want to believe in American car companies but it always seems to me that Toyota and Honda are a step ahead.
I know its hydrogen but the stuff really isnt any more dangerous than regular fuel. The lead paint is what blew up the Hindenburg. Not so much the Hydrogen.
Anyways i jsut don't see a bright future for GM and Dodge probably should have died a long time ago. They're fighting with one hand tied behind their back.

So you all know I have a thing for snacks; a somewhat unnatural obsession some might say. Well I was thinking about how much I miss one of my all time favorite - seriously a favorite not one of those transient obsessions - snacks: doo-dads. I thought, "Well fuckin'-a, self! There's that new-fangled intra-net thang, and maybe, just maybe I could order doo-dads online and relive the magic one more time!!" I am not at all alone in my quest to relive the god-like state of snacking one experiences when enjoying a box of doo-dads. Here's what I found:
Craving Doo Dads?
If you remember the snack mix Doo Dads then you probably know ChexMix is no replacement. Doo Dads was discontinued by Nabisco several years ago and until recently there was no replacement.
Well over the holidays I stumbled on something new from Nabisco. They’re called Mixers and they come in Traditional and some Cheese thing. Stay away from the cheese and buy the Traditional, it has a spicy taste just like Doo Dads.
Buy some salted peanuts and dump them in the bag. You’ll have to eat around the Ritz crackers though.

I would KILL a bus-load of kittens and orphans for a package of Doo Dads!!!! I’d murder the last unicorn for a mere lick of one of those corn Chex from the original Doo Dads! Doo Dads were the best snack ever made. The Canadians have taken our Doo Dads!!!
Take up arms, people! Take back the Doo Dads! I propose an invasion of Canada. Liberate the Doo Dads! Don’t worry, the Liberals will convince everyone it is “all about the oil” while we are stuffing our faces with the salty goodness of the real deal.
Forget Chex’s watered-down substitute.
Liberate the Doo Dads! Bomb Canada Today!!!!
PS. And Ritz crackers? WTF were they thinking?
#12. alan's friend wrote:
Once while walking through a supermarket on the snack aisle I encountered a box of doodads upside down on the shelf. As you will remember, the brand name “doodads” was spelled in lower case letters. You can imagine my surprise at seeing a product on the shelf named “spapoop.”
#19. Brian Lee Lewis wrote:
I searched the internet 5 years ago for information on DooDads and found nothing. I emailed Nabisco then. Now I have found all these posts of people also wanting doodads. I have thought about doodads on average once or twice a week for the last 5 years. Well, perhaps longer, because I thought about them when they were still available as well. The last time I ate DooDads was with my ex-girlfriend of three + years past. I have a picture of her nude with the box of DooDads covering her face which makes me feel sort of mixed up because otherwise I relate the DooDads to my great aunt Mable who brought them to me every time time she baby sat me and my siblings. I broke up with my girlfriend when Nabisco stopped selling DooDads. I didn’t have the same feelings for her suddenly. My life is sh*t without DooDads.
I’m a little bit confused about this Canada thing that people keep mentioning. Are there DooDads in Canada? If so, I am moving there.
#26 mullall9 wrote:
I have dreams about Doo Dads…happy, beautiful dreams that I never want to wake up from! My very last box was stolen by my roommate at the time and she thought they could replaced….SHE WAS WRONG! Needless to say, we are no longer friends! How can we get them back? Some sort of petition? We have to make it happen!

In light of Obama's recent invocation of the states secrets act (see below), a bi-partisan group of Senators have reintroduced a bill which would limit the President's authority in this regard.
“The State Secrets Protection Act will help guide the courts to balance the government’s interests in secrecy with accountability and the rights of citizens to seek judicial redress. The bill does not restrict the Government’s ability to assert the privilege in appropriate cases. In light of the pending cases where this privilege has been invoked, involving issues including torture, rendition and warrantless wiretapping, we can ill-afford to delay consideration of this important legislation. I hope all Senators will join us in supporting this bill.” - Patrick Leahy

Well, Tim Geithner is going to release his Bailout plan today. According to the NY Times, it contains the following provisions:
1) Exisiting bank execs will be allowed to remain in power and will not experience salary caps.
2) Bank shareholders will be protected at taxpayer expense.
3) The government will not dictate what the banks do with the money they receive.
4) The creation of an entity which will guarantee mortgage backed assets for private investors, putting taxpayer money on the line (likely, the only way to encourage private investors to buy these things at a rate acceptable to the current holders of the securities would be to guarantee them at or near the holder's current valuation, regardless of what their true value is).
Yippee.

Unfortunately, the investigation focuses on Thomas Tamm, the DOJ lawyer who leaked the existence of the program to the New York Times. Gideon Levy, writing in Israel's oldest daily newspaper, opines about Operation Cast Lead, Israel's ongoing assault on Palestine.
"Once again, Israel's violent responses, even if there is justification for them, exceed all proportion and cross every red line of humaneness, morality, international law and wisdom."
Try to imagine any US politician or media-figure uttering these words. Any who did would be immediately castigated and labeled an anti-Semite. In Israel, apparently, it is permissible to question the wisdom of that government's actions. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the US. Cue the boilerplate proclamations from our officials about Israel needing to take whatever steps it feels are necessary for its security.

"KopBusters rented a house in Odessa, Texas and began growing two small Christmas trees under a grow light similar to those used for growing marijuana. When faced with a suspected marijuana grow, the police usually use illegal FLIR cameras and/or lie on the search warrant affidavit claiming they have probable cause to raid the house. Instead of conducting a proper investigation which usually leads to no probable cause, the Kops lie on the affidavit claiming a confidential informant saw the plants and/or the police could smell marijuana coming from the suspected house.
The trap was set and less than 24 hours later, the Odessa narcotics unit raided the house only to find KopBuster's attorney waiting under a system of complex gadgetry and spy cameras that streamed online to the KopBuster's secret mobile office nearby...
It is not illegal to grow plants under a light in your home but it is illegal to lie on an affidavit and plant drugs on a citizen. This operation was the first of its kind in the history of America. Police sometimes have other police investigating their crimes but the American court system has never dealt with a group of citizens stinging the police. Will the police file charges on the team who took down the corrupt cops? We will keep you posted."

From John Cole's Balloon Juice:
THE TRAGEDY OF THE AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY:A Play in Three Acts
Dramatis Personae
BIG THREE, a manufacturer of automobiles
UAW, Big Three’s employee
MITT ROMNEY, an idiot
ACT ONE
BIG THREE: I have plans to build automobiles, but I need labor to do so!
UAW: I will labor for you if you will pay me $40 per hour.
BIG THREE: I will not pay you $40 per hour.
UAW: But I need to save for my inevitible retirement, and any health concerns that may arise.
BIG THREE: I will pay you $30 per hour, plus a generous pension of guaranteed payments and health care upon your retirement.
UAW: Then I agree to work for you!
ACT TWO
UAW: I am building cars for you, as I have promised to do!
BIG THREE: I am designing terrible cars that few people want to buy! Also, rather than save for UAW’s inevitible retirement when I will have to pay him the generous pension of guaranteed payments and health care that I promised, I am spending that money under the dubious assumption that my future revenues will be sufficient to meet those obligations.
ACT THREE
UAW: I have fulfilled my end of the deal by building the automobiles that you have asked me to build.
BIG THREE: Oh no! I am undone! My automobiles are no longer competitive due to my years of poor planning and poor judgment!
MITT ROMNEY: This is all UAW’s fault!

I refused to participate in such practices, and a month later, I extended that prohibition to the team of interrogators I was assigned to lead. I taught the members of my unit a new methodology -- one based on building rapport with suspects, showing cultural understanding and using good old-fashioned brainpower to tease out information. I personally conducted more than 300 interrogations, and I supervised more than 1,000. The methods my team used are not classified (they're listed in the unclassified Field Manual), but the way we used them was, I like to think, unique. We got to know our enemies, we learned to negotiate with them, and we adapted criminal investigative techniques to our work (something that the Field Manual permits, under the concept of "ruses and trickery"). It worked. Our efforts started a chain of successes that ultimately led to Zarqawi.
