As I see it, McCain tried to portray Obama as lacking a fundamental understanding of the world. Obama responded to these charges calmly and coherently. I think that Obama probably neutralized the attacks, but was stuck playing defense most of the time.
McCain looked old and tired, and his unwillingness to look at Obama probably hurt him.
The overall result is that neither candidate mopped the floor with the other, but Obama came off looking better than McCain. Without linking, the overnight polls seem to indicate that the public felt the same way. A few days must pass before we know the true impact of this debate, but I don't think that it changed the situation very much.
'Course, I was fucked up at the time.
