Sad story and all too common, unfortunately.
The other sad part is that this was interpreted in the 60s, and later in the 80s, not that we need better community services and state institutions to care for these individuals, but that we should close all state institutions and drop them in the community immediately.
The consequences of course were that people were thrown into the world with no leg on which to stand. Many receive their mental health care from the prison system or are simply homeless.
The community resources for children and adolescents are even more scarce and sorely needed.
Fuckin' hippies.
