garfield minus garfield
" Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolor disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against lonliness and methamphetamine addiction in a quiet American suburb."

Ladies and gentlemen, it's over!
Today, a courageous and bipartisan effort was made to protect telecommunications companies from the American people.
The Dodd amendment stripping retroactive immunity from the FISA bill failed 31-67. The Republican bloc marched lockstep, opposing the amendment 49-0. Eighteen Democrats joined the Republicans.
Smoke 'em if you got 'em.
**UPDATE**
You may recall that I mentioned that the version of the FISA bill passed by the House was quite different from the Intelligence Committee bill which will today be passed in the Senate. The good folks over at Firedoglake have a petition going that implores the members of the House to stand firm and not pass a new bill which mirrors that of the Senate. Take a moment to sign it.

Waterboarding
Given the recent revelations that US officials performed waterboarding on several prisoners shortly after 9/11, and US Attorney General Michael Mukasey's refusal to open an investigation into the affair, this piece by a former JAG officer and current judge/law professor on the matter is timely.

Telecom Immunity Update
It has come to this:
Monday will see the Senate Intelligence Bill come before the house, and all proposed amendments will receive a vote. The bill itself includes a provision providing retroactive immunity to those companies who participated in warrantless surveillance of Americans. Senator Dodd and Senator Feingold have proposed an amendment that will strip the bill of this provision. If they can manage to find 51 votes, then there will be no immunity provision in the final bill. Contact your Senators (even if they are dedicated Republicans) and ask them to support the Dodd/Feingold amendment.
**UPDATE**
Glenn Greenwald is claiming that the Dodd/Feingold amendment will need to get 60 votes, per the agreement. There is almost no chance of this happening. Tune in Monday to see our Senate sanction a crime against the American people!
I should note that the House passed version of the FISA bill that is substantially different from the one before the Senate. If the Senate passes the Intelligence Committee's bill on Monday, with the immunity provision, then there will have to be some reconciliation. There will be pressure on the House to pass a bill identical to the Senate version. So this fight isn't over yet.
