Ladies and gentlemen, it's over!
Today, a courageous and bipartisan effort was made to protect telecommunications companies from the American people.
The Dodd amendment stripping retroactive immunity from the FISA bill failed 31-67. The Republican bloc marched lockstep, opposing the amendment 49-0. Eighteen Democrats joined the Republicans.
Smoke 'em if you got 'em.
**UPDATE**
You may recall that I mentioned that the version of the FISA bill passed by the House was quite different from the Intelligence Committee bill which will today be passed in the Senate. The good folks over at Firedoglake have a petition going that implores the members of the House to stand firm and not pass a new bill which mirrors that of the Senate. Take a moment to sign it.

Telecom Immunity Update
It has come to this:
Monday will see the Senate Intelligence Bill come before the house, and all proposed amendments will receive a vote. The bill itself includes a provision providing retroactive immunity to those companies who participated in warrantless surveillance of Americans. Senator Dodd and Senator Feingold have proposed an amendment that will strip the bill of this provision. If they can manage to find 51 votes, then there will be no immunity provision in the final bill. Contact your Senators (even if they are dedicated Republicans) and ask them to support the Dodd/Feingold amendment.
**UPDATE**
Glenn Greenwald is claiming that the Dodd/Feingold amendment will need to get 60 votes, per the agreement. There is almost no chance of this happening. Tune in Monday to see our Senate sanction a crime against the American people!
I should note that the House passed version of the FISA bill that is substantially different from the one before the Senate. If the Senate passes the Intelligence Committee's bill on Monday, with the immunity provision, then there will have to be some reconciliation. There will be pressure on the House to pass a bill identical to the Senate version. So this fight isn't over yet.

New Walmart Line Of Fine Wines
Wal-Mart announced that, sometime in 2008, it will begin offering customers a new discount item ---- Wal-Mart's own brand of wine. The world's largest retail chain is teaming up with Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery of Modesto California to produce the beverage at an affordable price, in the $2 - $5 range.
Wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to put a bottle of "Wal-Mart" brand into their shopping carts, but"there is a market for inexpensive wine," said Kathy Micken, professor of marketing at University of Arkansas , Bentonville. "But the right name is important."
Customer surveys were conducted to determine the most attractive name
for the Wal-Mart wine brand.
The top surveyed names in order of popularity were:
10. Chateau Traileur Parc
9. White Trashfindel
8. Big Red Gulp
7. World Championship Riesling
6. NASCARbernet
5. Chef Boyardeaux
4. Peanut Noir
3. I Can't Believe it's not Vinegar
2. Grape Expectations
1. Nasti Spumante
The beauty of Wal-Mart wine is that it can be served with either
white meat (possum) or red meat (squirrel).
P.S. Don't bother writing back that this is a hoax. I know
possum is not a white meat.

Why are healthcare costs so high?
We've all heard it said that frivolous lawsuits are to blame. In 2001, malpractice claims accounted for 0.46% of total healthcare spending in the United States. A decade ago, administrative overhead accounted for a staggering 31% of total healthcare expenditures. But perhaps things have changed in the last decade... or perhaps not.
Why are administrative costs so high? A study in California offers an answer.

Telecom Immunity Update **UPDATED**
I realize that most of you probably aren't interested in this issue, but take my word for it that this is a important test for the rule of law in this country. The Republicans are going to force a vote on a permanent FISA bill, and Harry Reid has determined to bring to the floor a bill containing the provisions for immunity for companies that participated in warrantless surveillance. The legality of this issue should be decided in a courtroom, not in Congress. This measure would effectively strip citizens of their right to redress in a court of law.
Those of us who oppose this measure have an ally in Sens. Dodd and Feingold. But we need more. Dodd was drafted into the movement by concerned citizens. Now, an attempt is being made to add another champion to our ranks: former Senator John Edwards. The folks at Firedoglake have more on this. Take the time to click on the link and write John Edwards an email requesting his leadership.
**UPDATE**
Harry Reid has thrown down the gauntlet to the opponents of telecom immunity.

Medical Marijuana and The 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sorry if its not your jam, but heres a few of the candidates positions on a not so well know campaign issue
Mitt Romney:
This one made me cringe. While I don't think the question was really fair (it seems baited and the cameraman is incredibly callous) his response sucks as well.
Huckabee:
lol
McCain:
"Not Yet" good point on the medical use expanding into other "medical" uses though
Giuliani:
Fails again
Clinton:
"More research blah blah" aka "hmm...ill try and put this off some more while im in office"
Theres plenty of studies out there already
Obama:
We all know he used to get high. Pretty brief, but says he would not prosecute for medical use
Ron Paul:

Telecom Immunity Update: Senate Preparing to Screw Us
Harry Reid et al. are preparing to bring up once again the Intelligence Committee version of the FISA bill, which includes immunity for telecommunications companies involved in warrantless surveillance. Harry Reid ownes from $15,001 and $50,000 in the Dow Jones Telecomunication Index Fund, and received $22,000 in contributions from AT&T during the 2001-2006 election cycle.
Meanwhile, donations from these companies to Sen. Rockefeller, one of their most vocal champions, amounted to $42,000 in 2007.
